Microchip WiFi modules come from 2 acquisitions ( ZeroG and Roving Networks ).
There 2 companies developed their own chip and based on that chip a certified WiFi module.
So Microchip owns these chips but does not apparently sell them (unless maybe you have a large volume and you think you're able to do it cheaper than Mcrochip, including certifications).
My recommendation is to go, if cost allows, to a Linux based chip as Linux supports raw mode on some selected WiFi modules.
